An adult American woodcock (Scolopax minor) launched into the air in front of us as we picked our way through
a Michigan bog.
A few steps further, we discovered this very young American woodcock chick hidden among
the cranberry vines and sundew plants. Still mostly downy, the chick
was intricately patterned in an array of earth tones, expertly camouflaged.
Barry County, Southwest Michigan.
