t1050 ~ Barrens Buck Moth ~ Hemileuca maia

Photographed (2009) in Lake County, Michigan.

The Barrens buckmoth has an average wingspan of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm). The forewings and hind wings are black with narrow white median bands in the middle of the wings. The tip orbottom end of the abdomen is red in males and blackish in females. The larvae are blackish and have stinging hairs or spines.
