  • fertile and sterile leaves are similar in appearance
  • healthy fronds are well in excess of 50 cm long
  • sori are clearly elongate and lie along the veins on the lower leaf surfaces
  • similar in general appearance to Athryium filix femina , but differs due to grooves on the upper surface of the midrib (costa) of each pinna that do not join with the groove on the rachis
  • most have longer sori than does lady fern (Athryium filix femina)
  • sori may stand out dramatically, especially early in the summer
  • often a silvery appearance of the underside of the blade when sori are abundant
  • much less common than the similar Athyrium filix femina
