Characteristics:

  • FACU

  • sessile florts are very small (3mm to 3.5mm long)

  • florest have straight awn

  • a common grass of open sandy fields and juniper savannas

  • occasionally in mesic areas

  • closely resembles Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem).

  • can be distinguished superficially by the visibly expanded spathe like sheath mostly enclosing the racemes.

  • older stems are often reddish bronze, and are conspicuous late into the winter

  • native
