w1060 ~ Marsh Orb Weaver

I discovered this golden orb weaver spider (Argiope aurantia) passively waiting on his intricate silk web for a mosquito or grasshopper. Though somewhat intimidating in appearance, these large spiders are harmless to humans, and are actually quite vulnerable to bird predation. This one was inhabiting a rare type of sedge wetland meadow near Barry State Game Area, Barry County, Michigan.
