w1230 ~ Sandhill Crane Guarding Nest

The female sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) warily watched my camouflaged form as my kayak slipped silently among the cattails and other emergent wetland plants of a Michigan lake marsh. To ensure that I didn't frighten her from her nest, I used a 400mm telephoto lens (with 2x extender) to capture this majestic image from a distance of more than 80 ft away.
